ARISE O YE YOUNG AFRICAN LEADERS!

Arise o Compatriots!..

Here’s sharing an opportunity with young and promising African people of Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

President Obama quote: Africa's future belongs to its young people...we need young Africans who are standing up and making things happen not only in their own countries but around the world.

Applications are now open for President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative. Only 500 accomplished young leaders will get chosen. You must be a resident or citizen from a Sub-Saharan African country. This means that US Citizens and Resident Aliens are NOT eligible.

“The Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative. President Obama launched YALI in 2010 to support young African leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa. The Washington Fellowship, which begins in 2014, will bring 500 young leaders to the United States each year for academic coursework and leadership training and will create unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries”.

Young African Leaders Initiative is an unparalleled opportunity to:

  • Interact with President Obama at a Presidential Summit in Washington, D.C.;
  • Participate in a 6-week intensive academic and leadership program at a U.S. institution;
  • Meet with U.S. government, civic, and business leaders;
  • Access exceptional internship and apprenticeship opportunities;
  • Expand your business or project through access to millions of dollars for small grant funding; and
  • Join a continent-wide and global alumni network to help you seek innovative solutions to common challenges.

The motive is to take this knowledge back home and use for the advancement of the continent (Ile). Please share with others you think may be interested and eligible. Application ends  { on my birthday 😉 } January 27, 2014.  All the best.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : TOSIN

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.  ~Berthold Auerbach

Hello Peeps,

Hope everyone is doing alright. There’s always music to make you feel a little better. Right?  The spotlight is on a very good, personal, musical friend of mine, coincidentally a namesake, TOSIN (Tosin is a Nigerian (Yoruba) unisex name, short form of Oluwatosin which means ‘God is enough to be worshiped or God is worthy to be worshiped). Tosin is a songwriter, vocalist, drummer extraordinaire, composer and arranger. He is one of ‘us’ carrying the torch of African music in the US diaspora. He is  a renowned drummer & percussionist (oh I said that already :)) former – Ayetoro band member who has played with who’s who in the industry including Spyro Gyra, Femi Kuti, Andres Levin, Jon Carroll, Antibalas, Julie Dexter among others. More on his site. I absolutely love his sound and vibe, afro feel with a touch of contemporary lacings, and his use of the Yoruba language, just like my music. Keep scrolling. 🙂

I will let this video of his interview with Heather Maxwell do the talking. Enjoy.

Emmanuel 2013

♫ It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ♫

Thanking God for the gift of his son ‘Jesus, Our Savior’ (‘Our Olugbala’  in Yoruba)  as we celebrate another Christmas, we must all remember to focus on the reason for the season – ‘Emmanuel ~God With Us’. Thanking God also for the gift of music and for blessing ‘Yours Sincerely’ with the gift of ‘Voice’. 🙂  I am particularly honored and blessed  to be continually recognized over time and afforded diverse platforms of expressions to share my talent. I love Christmas carols. As a teenager, I caroled with groups in my neighborhood and loved every moment of it. I sang with my Grandma in Catholic church choir and also witnessed various cathedral type music concerts. I believe these experiences contribute to my place on a larger stage today.

Afro /African, Folk, Jazz, Soul, Gospel, NeoSoul, Gospel, Reggae,I sing ’em all , well maybe not ‘Hip-Hop’ lol but I will be swimming in a not regularly chartered waters this coming Sunday, on an operatic and classical  note 🙂 as I appear as a Guest Soloist on the classic version of a song ‘Ise Oluwa’ which is also on my AfroSpire Demo project here . So if you are based in Atlanta, come out to the Emmanuel Cantata 2013 organized by The Maboush Group. Its a formal dress code event and its FREE with registration here

Hope to see you there. Come see your ‘Dreamer Girl‘ climb some glorious notes 😀

NAIJABOYZ ARE BAAAAAAAAACK!!

Top of the day to you all,

So this musical comedic duo, ‘The Komolafe Twins’ aka Naijaboyz have been in hiatus for a while. I’ve always been amused by their African take on mainstream pop music through their intentionally satirical videos and spoofy remixes. So they just launched their comeback with an ‘African Parents’ spin on disciplining their wayward teenagers, influenced by  ‘Miley Cyrus’  using her “Wrecking Ball” music video. You need to be conversant with all the drama surrounding Miley Cyrus and the ‘Wrecking Ball’ video and maybe a little more familiar with the ‘legality’ and regularity of corporal punishment back in Nigeria ( and maybe Africa in general) especially pre-MTV generation to enjoy the video. Funny enough I was just having that conversation yesterday about how we got spanked in secondary school albeit as innocent students alongside the perpetrator if no one owned up to the accusation ha ha.:D.

Nevertheless, this is just plain and simple – hilarious.

NaijaBoyz

So here goes NaijaBoyz Music video Miley Cyrus performing ‘Wrecking Ball’ The African Remix.. Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball (Chatroulette Version) By the way, “Chop Igbati” means “Give you a dirty and resounding slap” (not a literal translation lol but that’s the idea, “chop”- pidgin for “take it”, igbati – “slap” in Yoruba)

Young generation ‘Africans in America’, or in the ‘West’ in general, you have to relate.. 😀

LET ME HELP YOU SET YOUR DINNER TABLE

Hello Friends…

To those who live in the US, you know what time of the year is. Yep! It’s Thanksgiving holiday tomorrow, goes without saying we all know everyday IS a day to be thankful; but here goes the history of Thanksgiving.  To everyone in general, well this may serve as a useful info for you especially  if  you like to be prim and proper in your hospitality/presentation.

Here’s a graphic on how that dinner table is really supposed to be set if you ever wondered what the correct way is. I am guilty of random placement in the past 🙂 . Click to enlarge.

As for the  menu,  I almost always don’t really do (some things) as the Romans do when I’m in Rome, I tend to do things that the Romans will find intriguing and interesting enough to maybe, copy.  In that light, so as to be not much of a rebel, my thanksgiving menu this year will be about 85% a deviation from the norm, I will of course be cooking  the  proverbial turkey, dodo (fried plantain – my fav), Jollof Rice, sauteed vegetables, tossed salad, rolls, stuffing, pad Thai shrimp, sweet potato casserole, pan roasted brussels sprouts,  with sides of spring rolls, meatpies, fruits & pumpkin pie as dessert and/or cheesecake (my fav), and any other spontaneous item that pops up in my head tomorrow {self confessed Queen of Spontaneity } 🙂 . It’s really a simple and intimate one this year. So what’s on your menu?

Above all, I am thankful  for you, me & mine and  all of God’s blessings..

Thanks for stopping by and Have a Happy and Enjoyable Thanksgiving!

Cheers
